Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0030 refers to the heater control circuit of the upstream oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1). Oxygen sensors must reach a high operating temperature (approx. 600°F) to provide accurate feedback to the ECM for fuel trim adjustments. To achieve this quickly, a heater element is built into the sensor. The ECM monitors the heater circuit for proper resistance and current draw. P0030 is triggered when the ECM detects an open circuit, meaning no current is flowing through the heater element, preventing the sensor from reaching its operational state efficiently during cold starts.

Internal heater element failure within the oxygen sensor (Defective sensor)
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the sensor connector
Blown fuse for the O2 sensor heater circuit (check relay if applicable)
Internal ECM failure failing to provide ground/power to the circuit

- Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness for Bank 1 Sensor 1 for fraying or heat damage. Check the connector for moisture or corrosion.
- Fuse Check: Locate and test the fuse associated with the O2 sensor heaters.
- Resistance Test: Unplug the sensor and measure resistance across the heater terminals (usually the two wires of the same color). A typical reading is 10–20 Ohms. An 'OL' reading indicates a failed heater element.
- Voltage Test: With the ignition ON, check for 12V power at the harness connector. Verify that the ECM is providing a ground signal (pulse-width modulated).
- Replacement: If the heater element is open, replace the oxygen sensor with a high-quality OEM part.
