Technical Description
P003C is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for an 'Open Circuit' in the Camshaft Profile Control 'A' circuit on Bank 2. This typically refers to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid or Oil Control Valve (OCV). The PCM monitors the continuity and resistance of this circuit. When the PCM attempts to ground the solenoid to change camshaft timing or lift profiles and detects zero current flow or no voltage drop, it identifies an open circuit and triggers the MIL. This is a purely electrical fault detection before mechanical actuation is even attempted.
Possible Causes
Open electrical circuit (broken wire) or loose connector at the VVT solenoid
Faulty camshaft profile solenoid (internal open coil)
Corrosion in the connector terminals causing an open circuit
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) internal driver failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect wiring and connectors leading to the Bank 2 VVT solenoid for fraying, breakage, or corrosion.
- Resistance Test (Solenoid): Disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance across the terminals. Normal values are usually 7-15 Ohms. An 'OL' or infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit (replace solenoid).
- Voltage Test (Wiring): Verify 12V power supply at the connector with ignition on. Check the signal wire to the PCM for continuity.
- Bi-directional Test: Use a scan tool to command the solenoid ON/OFF and verify operation. Use an oscilloscope to check the PWM signal duty cycle.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
