Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0050 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an electrical malfunction in the heater control circuit of the upstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1). Modern Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) rely on an internal heating element to reach operating temperatures quickly. The ECM monitors the heater circuit via a low-side driver, often using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). If the ECM detects an open circuit, short to ground, or excessive resistance that deviates from the expected current draw, P0050 is stored. This prevents the system from entering closed-loop fuel control promptly, leading to increased emissions.
Possible Causes
Failed heater element inside the oxygen sensor (internal open circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or frayed wires leading to the sensor
Corrosion or poor pin tension in the sensor connector
Blown fuse for the O2 heater circuit or internal ECM failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Inspect fuses related to the engine management system and O2 heaters.
- Visually inspect the connector at Bank 2 Sensor 1 for signs of thermal damage or corrosion.
- Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the heater element across the sensor terminals. Usually, this should be between 2-30 Ohms. An infinite reading (OL) indicates a failed sensor.
- Verify 12V power supply to the heater circuit at the harness connector with the key on/engine running.
- If wiring and power are intact, use an oscilloscope to check the PWM ground signal from the ECM.
