Technical Description
P0056 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for 'HO2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 2'. It indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage in the heater element circuit of the downstream oxygen sensor on bank 2. Downstream sensors are used to monitor catalytic converter efficiency. The heater is essential for bringing the sensor to its operating temperature quickly to allow the system to enter 'Closed Loop' operation. The ECM monitors the current draw or duty cycle of the heater; if it falls outside calibrated limits, P0056 is triggered.
Possible Causes
Failed heater element inside the oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2)
Damaged or burnt wiring harness near the exhaust system
Blown fuse for the oxygen sensor heater circuit
Corrosion in the sensor connector terminals
Very rare: Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure in the heater driver circuit
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness for Bank 2 Sensor 2. Ensure it is not touching the exhaust pipe or melted.
- Fuse Check: Locate and check the fuse associated with the oxygen sensor heaters (often labeled O2 HTR or ENGINE).
- Ohmmeter Test: Disconnect the sensor. Measure the resistance across the heater terminals (usually the two wires of the same color, often white). Specs are typically 5-20 Ohms. If it reads infinite (O.L), the sensor is defective.
- Circuit Test: Verify 12V power at the harness connector with the key on. Check the ground side circuit controlled by the ECM.
- Connector Service: Clean any corrosion from the connector pins.
- Replacement: If the heater resistance is out of spec, replace the oxygen sensor.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
