Technical Description
P0058 is an OBD-II generic code indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a high voltage condition in the heater control circuit of the Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) for Bank 2, Sensor 2. The oxygen sensor must reach a specific operating temperature to function correctly. The ECM utilizes a heating circuit to accelerate this process. If the ECM monitors a voltage level that is higher than the calibrated threshold (commonly indicating a short to power), P0058 is set. This sensor is located downstream of the catalytic converter.
Possible Causes
Faulty Oxygen Sensor (internal short in heater element)
Wiring shorted to 12V power supply
Damaged connector (corrosion or moisture causing a short)
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring and connectors for Bank 2, Sensor 2. Look for burnt wires or corrosion.
- Resistance Test: Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance of the heater circuit on the sensor side. Typical values are 2-20 Ohms. An 'OL' reading or near zero Ohms indicates a failed sensor heater.
- Voltage Test: Check for battery voltage (approx. 12.6V) at the vehicle-side harness connector with the ignition ON.
- Component Replacement: If wiring is verified and sensor resistance is incorrect, replace the Oxygen Sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2).
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
