Technical Description
P005B is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a performance problem or range issue within the exhaust camshaft profile control circuit for Bank 2. This system (often related to VVT or Variable Valve Lift) uses an actuator/solenoid controlled by a PWM signal to switch between camshaft lobes or adjust timing. The ECU monitors the position via the camshaft position sensor (CMP). If the actual position deviates from the commanded position for a specific duration, or if the electrical feedback indicates the solenoid is not moving as expected despite being powered, P005B is stored. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1.
Possible Causes
Dirty or contaminated engine oil (clogs VVT solenoid/oil passages)
Failing exhaust camshaft profile control solenoid (Bank 2)
Low engine oil pressure preventing hydraulic movement
Wiring issues (corrosion, open circuit, or short to ground)
Failed camshaft phaser/actuator (mechanical internal failure)
Outdated PCM/ECU software

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
