Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P005C indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a performance issue or a 'stuck off' condition within the Camshaft Profile Control system (Profile B) on Bank 2. This system (often termed VVL or VVT) modifies the valve lift to optimize engine performance. The ECM monitors the solenoid's response and the resulting engine load/airflow changes. If the mechanical transition to high-lift mode fails despite the command, the code is set. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1.
Possible Causes
Dirty or contaminated engine oil blocking oil galleries or the solenoid
Faulty Oil Control Solenoid (VVT/VVL solenoid) for Profile B
Wiring harness issues (open circuit or short to ground)
Internal mechanical failure of the camshaft adjuster or locking pin
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check engine oil level and condition. If the oil is dark or sludgy, perform an oil and filter change immediately.
- Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness for the Bank 2 VVL solenoid for corrosion or fraying.
- Measure the solenoid internal resistance using a multimeter (typically 7-12 Ohms). Verify 12V supply to the solenoid.
- Use a bi-directional scan tool to perform an output test on the solenoid and listen for an audible click.
- If the solenoid is electrically sound but the fault persists, remove it and inspect for clogged oil screens or debris.
- Replace the solenoid if it fails mechanical or electrical testing.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
