Technical Description
P0064 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects a voltage condition in the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) heater control circuit for Bank 2, Sensor 1 that is higher than the commanded limit. The oxygen sensor requires a specific operating temperature (approx. 315°C/600°F) to accurately monitor exhaust gases. A heater element is used to reach this temperature quickly. The ECM monitors the current draw and voltage on this circuit; a 'High' condition usually indicates a short to voltage or an internal failure in the sensor's heating element where it fails to pull the circuit low as expected.

Corrosion or moisture in the sensor electrical connector

Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Check the wiring and connector for HO2S (Bank 2, Sensor 1) for chafing, burnt wires, or pin corrosion.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Unplug the sensor and measure resistance across the heater element pins. Specified values are typically 2–30 Ohms. An 'Open' (OL) reading indicates a failed heater.
- VOLTAGE TEST: With the engine running (cold start), check for battery voltage (12V+) at the harness side connector. Ensure the ECM is providing the ground pulse.
- REPLACEMENT: If the sensor's heater resistance is out of spec or internal shorting is confirmed, replace the oxygen sensor.
- ECM DIAGNOSIS: If sensor and wiring pass all tests, use an oscilloscope to verify the PWM heater control signal from the ECM.
Mechanic's Tip
