Technical Description
P0084 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code which indicates an electrical circuit fault within the exhaust valve control solenoid for the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system on Bank 2. Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. The ECU monitors the feedback from the solenoid circuit; if it detects an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage that exceeds a specified duty cycle threshold, the code is stored. This is primarily an electrical circuit monitor rather than a mechanical performance monitor.
Possible Causes
Faulty exhaust VVT solenoid (Bank 2)
Wiring issues (open circuit or short to ground/voltage)
Corroded or loose connector pins
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring and connector for the Bank 2 exhaust VVT solenoid for oil intrusion or corrosion.
- Resistance Test: Disconnect the solenoid and measure internal resistance with a multimeter. Typical values are 7–15 Ohms (refer to service manual). 'OL' indicates an open coil.
- Circuit Voltage Test: Ensure 12V is present at the connector with ignition ON. Verify the ECM’s ability to pulse-width modulate the ground side.
- Actuation Test: Use a scan tool to command the solenoid ON/OFF and listen for a mechanical 'click'.
- Replacement: If the solenoid fails resistance or actuation tests, replace the VVT control solenoid.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
