Technical Description
P008A is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the pressure in the low-pressure side of the fuel system is below the calibrated limit. The system typically includes an in-tank electric fuel pump, a fuel pressure sensor (LPFS), and often a fuel pump driver module (FPDM). The ECM monitors the pressure via a 5V reference signal. If the feedback voltage indicates pressure below the target threshold (e.g., below 45 psi when 65 psi is commanded) for a set duration, the code triggers. Low lift pump pressure can starve the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP), causing lean conditions and potential engine stall.
Possible Causes
Clogged fuel filter or failing low-pressure fuel pump (lift pump)
Faulty Low-Pressure Fuel Pressure Sensor (LPFS)
Fuel line restriction/leak or faulty Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM/Relay)
Damaged wiring harness or corrosion in fuel pump connectors
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check fuel lines for leaks or kinks. Inspect the fuel filter (replace if service interval is exceeded).
- Pressure Testing: Perform a mechanical fuel pressure test using a gauge on the low-pressure side. Compare with the live data sensor value (if they differ significantly, the sensor is faulty).
- Electrical Testing: Verify 5V reference and ground at the pressure sensor. Check voltage supply to the fuel pump (should be battery voltage or a PWM signal depending on the system design).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to command the fuel pump active and monitor duty cycle and amperage draw.
- Component Replacement: Replace fuel filter first, then fuel pump or sensor based on diagnosis results.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
