Technical Description
P0095 is a generic powertrain code related to the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor 2 circuit. Unlike IAT 1, which is typically located integrated into the MAF sensor, IAT 2 is usually positioned in the intake manifold or after the intercooler on forced induction engines. The ECU uses this NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor to monitor the efficiency of the intercooler and adjust boost, ignition timing, and fueling. A malfunction in this circuit prevents the ECU from accurately calculating air density, often resulting in reduced engine power (Limp Mode) to prevent engine damage from pre-ignition.
Possible Causes
Faulty IAT sensor 2 (internal open or short circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or corroded connectors to the sensor
Contaminated sensor element (oil buildup from PCV system)
Internal ECU failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect the connector at IAT sensor 2 for corrosion or bent pins. Check the wiring harness for signs of rubbing or breakage.
- VOLTAGE TEST: Disconnect the sensor. With ignition ON (Engine OFF), measure for a 5V reference signal and a solid ground.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Measure the sensor's resistance using a Multimeter. Typically around 2-3 kOhms at room temp (25°C). If reading is O.L (open loop), the sensor is faulty.
- LIVE DATA CHECK: Use a scan tool to monitor IAT 2 readings. On a cold start, IAT 1 and IAT 2 should show similar ambient temperatures.
- COMPONENT REPLACEMENT: Clean the sensor with specialized cleaner if oil-fouled; if reading remains erratic, replace the sensor.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
