Technical Description
P009E is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a performance issue or a 'stuck off' condition within the Fuel Pressure Relief (PRV) control circuit. The PRV is designed to bleed off excessive fuel pressure from the high-pressure common rail to the return line. This code is stored if the ECM commands the valve to open but the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor does not report a corresponding drop in pressure, or if the solenoid's duty cycle/current draw is outside of stoichiometric maps. This can lead to rail overpressure conditions, causing the vehicle to enter a protective limp mode to prevent damage to the high-pressure fuel system components.
Possible Causes
Mechanical failure of the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (stuck/seized)
Faulty Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor reporting incorrect pressure data
Wiring harness damage or corroded connectors to the PRV solenoid
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) fault or software calibration error

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
