Technical Description
P00B5 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the signal from Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor 2 is erratic or reacting too slowly. ECT 2 is typically located at the radiator outlet to monitor radiator efficiency. The ECM compares the readings from ECT 2 with ECT 1 and other sensors like Intake Air Temperature (IAT). If the voltage signal from ECT 2 does not change within a calibrated timeframe or shows irrational jumps, the rationality check fails. This can disrupt electric fan control and active grille shutter systems.
Possible Causes
Faulty Radiator Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor 2
Corrosion or poor connection in the sensor connector
Stuck or malfunctioning thermostat causing irrational temperature deltas
Wiring harness issues (short to ground/voltage) or air pockets in the cooling system

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
