Technical Description
P0205 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a fault in the control circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder 5. The ECM monitors the injector's driver circuit for the correct resistance and current draw. If the ECM does not detect the expected voltage drop or 'flyback' voltage when the injector is pulsed, it identifies an open circuit or a short. This typically results in a total shutdown of fuel delivery to that specific cylinder to protect the catalytic converter.
Possible Causes
Faulty fuel injector (internal solenoid open circuit or short)
Corrosion or poor connection in the injector 5 electrical connector
Wiring harness damage (chafing or rodent damage) causing an open circuit
Failed injector driver circuit within the Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Visually inspect the connector for injector 5. Look for corrosion, bent pins, or fluid intrusion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
- STEP 2: Measure resistance of the injector. Disconnect the plug and measure across the injector terminals. Typical spec: 12-16 Ohms (compare with neighboring injectors).
- STEP 3: Check voltage supply. With ignition ON, verify 12V at one of the connector pins. Use a 'Noid Light' or oscilloscope to confirm the ECM is pulsing the ground side during cranking.
- STEP 4: If injector resistance is out of spec (infinite/open), replace injector 5. Clear codes and perform a road test.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
