Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0216 refers to a failure within the injection timing control circuit. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the timing of fuel injection to ensure optimal combustion. In electronically controlled diesel injection pumps, a timing solenoid adjusts the internal pressure to move a timing piston. If the ECM detects that the actual timing (measured via CPS or pump sensor) does not match the commanded timing (target vs. actual), P0216 is set. This often involves a failure of the timing piston to move freely or a breakdown in the solenoid's electrical circuit.
Possible Causes
Internal wear or sticking timing piston inside the injection pump (common on VP44 pumps)
Failing injection timing control solenoid
Fuel restriction or air in the fuel lines affecting internal pump pressure
Wiring issues (corrosion or short circuit) between the ECM and the pump's control module

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
