Technical Description
P0251 is a generic diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a malfunction in the fuel metering control circuit of high-pressure pump 'A'. In Common Rail systems, this usually refers to the Inlet Metering Valve (IMV) or Fuel Volume Control Valve (VCV). The ECU monitors the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal sent to the valve; if the feedback or the resulting rail pressure doesn't match the mapped values, the code is stored. This often leads to immediate limp mode to protect the high-pressure components.

- Fuel System: Replace the fuel filter if maintenance history is unknown. Perform an injector leak-back test to ensure excessive return flow isn't dropping the rail pressure.
- Component replacement: Replace the fuel metering valve (IMV) or, if diagnosis points to internal mechanical failure, the high-pressure pump.
