Technical Description
P0507 is a generic OBD-II code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an idle speed that is higher than the target RPM. The ECU monitors idle through the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and attempts to adjust it via the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or electronic throttle body. If the RPM remains above a calibrated threshold (typically 100-200 RPM above target) for a set duration, P0507 is stored. This can affect drivability, emissions, and transmission engagement.
Possible Causes
Vacuum leak downstream of the throttle body (e.g., intake manifold gasket or cracked hoses)
Dirty or faulty Electronic Throttle Body (ETB)
Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or carbon buildup
Failed PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve leaking air
Faulty Power Steering Pressure Switch or electrical circuit issues
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Inspect for vacuum leaks: Use a smoke machine or brake cleaner to check the intake manifold and vacuum lines.
- Clean the throttle body: Heavy carbon deposits can prevent the blade from closing. Perform a 'Throttle Relearn' procedure afterward.
- Check PCV system: Ensure the PCV valve is functioning and not leaking unmetered air.
- Test the IAC valve (if equipped): Check internal resistance (typically 10-30 Ohms) and operation with a bi-directional scan tool.
- Verify TPS data: Ensure the Throttle Position Sensor reports correct closed-throttle voltage.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
