Technical Description
P0519 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the actual engine idle speed does not match the target idle speed stored in its memory. The ECM monitors RPM via the crankshaft position sensor and attempts to adjust it using the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or an electronic throttle body. If the rpm deviates beyond a calibrated threshold (typically 100-200 RPM) for a specific duration, the code is triggered. This suggests a mechanical restriction, vacuum leak, or a faulty control circuit/motor.
Possible Causes
Carbon buildup or dirt in the throttle body or Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
Vacuum leaks (unmetered air) downstream of the MAF sensor
Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) motor/actuator
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor providing incorrect thermal mapping
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check all vacuum hoses for cracks or loose connections. Clean the throttle body and IAC passages with specialized cleaner.
- Measurement: Check the IAC valve internal resistance with a multimeter (standard range 6–14 Ohms). Verify 12V power supply to the actuator.
- Advanced diagnosis: Use a scan tool to perform an 'Active Test' on the IAC valve/Electronic Throttle to monitor RPM response. Check TPS data for correct idle positioning.
- Repair: If cleaning fails and electrical values are out of spec, replace the IAC valve or throttle assembly. Perform an 'Idle Relearn' procedure after replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
