Technical Description
P0563 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects a system voltage that is higher than the specified upper limit. While normal charging voltage is typically between 13.5V and 14.8V, this code is usually triggered if voltage exceeds 15.0V or 16.0V for a calibrated duration. This condition is most commonly caused by a failed internal voltage regulator within the alternator. High system voltage is critical as it can damage electronic control units (ECUs), blow bulbs, and cause the battery to outgas or overheat. In some cases, the vehicle may enter 'Limp Mode' or disable certain CAN-bus modules to protect sensitive circuitry.
Possible Causes
Faulty voltage regulator (usually internal to the alternator)
Failing alternator (internal short)
Damaged wiring or corrosion at battery terminals/ground points causing sense wire errors
Faulty battery with high internal resistance
Very rare: Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
