Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P00A5 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an electrical malfunction or signal out of range in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor 2 circuit for Bank 2. On engines with multiple banks, Bank 2 is the side opposite cylinder #1. The IAT sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance based on temperature (NTC). The ECM monitors the 5V reference signal returned from the sensor. This data is critical for calculating air density, adjusting fuel trim, and ignition timing, particularly in forced induction engines where IAT2 monitors the efficiency of the charge air cooler.
Possible Causes
Faulty IAT sensor 2 (internal short or open circuit)
Poor electrical connection or oxidized terminals at the sensor connector
Wiring harness damage (chafing leading to short to ground or open circuit)
Intercooler malfunction causing temperature readings outside valid range
Internal ECM failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the IAT sensor connector for corrosion or bent pins. Inspect the wiring harness for signs of rubbing or damage.
- Live Data Analysis: Use a scan tool to monitor IAT Bank 2 readings. -40°C usually indicates an open circuit, while +150°C indicates a short to ground.
- Voltage Test: Disconnect the sensor. With ignition ON, check for a 5.0V reference signal between the signal wire and ground.
- Resistance Test: Measure the sensor's resistance using an Ohm meter. At room temperature (20°C/68°F), it should typically be between 2k-3k Ohms (check specific service manual for specs).
- Replacement: If wiring and reference voltage are correct but the sensor readings remain invalid, replace the IAT sensor 2.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
